We all enjoy the benefits of WiFi at home, the free movement with the smartphone or tablet, the fast integration of new devices or the liberating feeling to do without the need to lay cables. In order to benefit from these advantages, some important basics need to be considered. The following tricks are a small part of what our self-care solution m2suite, handles automatically for the users: From the optimisation of the WiFi channel, the graphical presentation of the WiFi environment to the possibility to measure the WiFi signal strength at different positions. It is our main concern to provide the best tools for users, so they are independently able to optimally use all Internet services. A core prerequisite for that is a fast and stable WiFi connection. The tips below nicely complement the m2suite and help those who don’t have access to automated tools like ours.
1. Optimise your WiFi channel
We have already stressed the significance of channel optimisation in the past, nonetheless it still should always be mentioned first when it comes to improving WiFi. If you run out of other options, finding the optimal WiFi channel still has one of the biggest impacts on your WiFi connection. We recommend starting with that.
2. Choose the optimal modem position
More important than you might think!
- Choose a slightly elevated position
- Do not hide your modem! (… let’s say behind or within furniture)
- Place it as centrally as possible – even with short cables you have a surprising amount of options
- If there is not much you can do with your modem, consider using a WiFi extender or additional WiFi router to achieve the coverage you want
3. Use a WiFi extender to increase the range
So what if your telephone or cable port is at a very inconvenient spot in your home? The first step would be to use the available cable length to reposition the modem, but then of course the point of using a wireless connection loses its purpose. A WiFi extender might be an alternative. As soon as you want to reliably cover multiple floors, a WiFi extender provides the possibility to ensure a good WiFi reception even over longer distances.
Our pro tip: Place the extender half way between the modem and the desired location, to keep the utilization as high as possible.
4. Check your old WiFi devices
Current modems usually support a wide range of different WiFi standards and frequencies to communicate with new as well as with older devices. There might be some restrictions if you use WiFi devices with the 802.11b standard, e.g. an older printer. Even though your WiFi network does not necessarily suffer massive problems all the time, older WiFi devices in the same network can reduce the transmission speed of your WiFi.
5. Use the 5 GHz frequency
Today many devices support the 5 GHz frequency band, which offers significantly more free WiFi channels than the 2.4 GHz band. Furthermore, the 5 GHz frequency is generally not utilised as much and supports higher transmission speeds. Please be aware, 5 GHz has a tendency to have shorter range. We recommend testing the different frequency bands of your modem (if supported) and compare the results to see which one delivers the best WiFi experience for your situation.
